U.S.M.C. Viet Nam War Era Officer's Dress Whites Uniform Cap Cover, Jacket, Trousers, and Long-Sleeve Button-Up Undershirt Kit

Uniforms like these were used by officers during the Vietnam War and were almost always private-purchases made by the officer, as this set is, and were often permitted for wear in hot, tropical climates, such as the jungles of Vietnam. These uniforms were used for anything from formal occasions to high-profile ceremonies and were authorized for wear by officers only, making them an exclusive and hard-to-come-by uniform as so few were made and most were stained and gotten rid of. While there is no provenance or names on this uniform that could tell more about its history, it being completely blank makes it a great set to dress up in honor of a service member or for replacing a lost, sold, or otherwise missing uniform! Sets like these don't show up often, and if you've got a need for it; buy it before someone else does!

*** Please note these uniforms were sometimes altered by their previous owners which leads to a discrepancy between the size tag and the actual measurements of the clothing. For this reason we have measured the coat and trousers to ensure a proper fit. Keep in mind these uniforms are an athletic fit! ***

Very Good Condition. Uniform appears very nicely given its age and could almost pass for being un-worn, maybe due to the efforts of the previous owner in keeping it clean. The gold-colored buttons do have slight patina on them from age. The coat, pants, and hat cover do not have any noticeable stains that ruin the clean look of the uniform. The undershirt is stained as it does have a few easily seen stains which are pictured. Additionally, the undershirt may be missing the top button and looks to be missing the buttons used to adjust the wrist cuffs. The yellow text of the tag on the undershirt is somewhat hard to read due to age and the fact the text is in such a light color. Otherwise all other pieces appear near-new for their age as it is incredibly hard to find one of these uniforms unstained and in this good of a condition, let alone find one of these sets in general. Please keep in mind this is an all-white uniform most likely made in the early 1960s and will stain very easily. Since this uniform lacks any names, patches, pins, and ribbons and is consistent other private-purchase examples from the 1960s, it is much better suited for collection purposes or for dressing it up with the appropriate accessories for a display honoring a service member. Please remember, when buying military surplus, these items were intended to be used heavily under high intensity conditions. Age and amount of use is a HUGE factor in condition. Unless stated otherwise do not expect a perfect pristine item, it will have its flaws. See conditions below.

  • Good Condition: shows signs of use, light fading/ possible small stains and or small factory repairs. Tags may be legible, may have name tapes and patches sewn on by previous owner. Various dates and manufacturers.

  • Fair Condition: shows signs of use, fading/ small stains or holes/ factory repairs. Tags may be legible, may have name tapes and patches sewn on by previous owner. Various dates and manufacturers.

  • Poor Condition: shows signs of heavy use, fading/ stains/ holes/ rips/ major factory repairs. Tags may be legible, may have name tapes and patches sewn on by previous owner. Various dates and manufacturers.

Military surplus comes in a variety of different conditions based the three " W " rule: What, Where, When.

  • Depending on what the item is will generally determine the amount of use and what it was used for. This is important because some items do not endure the torture of being in the field for prolonged periods of time, while others might.

  1. Ex: Dress Uniforms are not worn in combat, therefore generally, there is lighter use than issued combat/working uniforms.


  • Knowing where the item most likely was issued/stored will generally determine the environment it was exposed to. This is important because some items are exposed to harsher conditions than others, or are straight from storage.

  1. Ex: Uniforms & Gear issued in the Vietnam War saw extreme heat and moister, giving those items specific textures/smells/common problems, while the same items issued to troops in occupied Europe do not have those attributes (Generally better conditions). 
  2. Ex: Uniforms & Gear stored in a controlled environment (warehouses or similar areas) feel and smell different than if it is stored in a non-controlled environment (Random areas/outside/or exposed to elements)



  • Time is a huge factor, when something was issued generally determines the age of the item. As time goes by everything ages, this is the circle of life and it does apply to inanimate objects, like military surplus. Items will show signs of age, typically tarnished metal/fading/stains/rips/holes/rot/smell. The exception to the rule is NOS ( New old stock) items or ones stored carefully in controlled environments.

  1. Ex: Uniforms & Gear from World War 2 are generally made of canvas/leather/twill or HBT fabric, and are close to 100 years old. These items have more than likely seen combat or were reissued in the Korean or Vietnam Wars. Extensive use and the fact that they are almost a century old will reflect the condition & price. This applies to any era. 
  2. Ex: Uniforms & Gear from the original factory box, or items stored carefully in controlled environments will generally retain their durability and "new" look. The age of an item sometimes is not a factor BUT only when it is properly stored or carefully looked after.
