Near the port of Salerno, Operation Avalanche was executed on September 9, 1943, beginning the Allies' 20-month mainland Italian campaign of brutal fighting. A "surprise" attack was greeted by overconfident Nazi bums and the phrase, "Come on in and give up. We have you covered." The Americans followed their orders, but forgot about the giving up part.
